The Legal Department, under the direction of the City Attorney, is cognizant of all legal affairs of the city and of all matters pertaining to the office of the city attorney. It is the city attorney's duty to take the management, charge and control of all the legal business of the city and to be, in regard to all municipal affairs, the legal advisor of the mayor, the city council and the committees thereof, and all of the department heads, officers and boards of the city. The city attorney provides, when required, written or verbal opinions of law to the aforesaid, upon any subject in which the city is interested. The Solid Waste Department is responsible for refuse collection and disposal for over 80,000 residential and commercial City customers. Its goal is to provide efficient and environmentally safe solid waste collection and disposal. More than 360,000 tons of solid waste is processed annually. Eighty-eight percent is received at the McKay Bay Refuse to Energy Facility (RTE) where waste is separated and then burned to produce electricity. Nine percent of the current waste stream is recycled either through City of Tampa Recycling Programs or private ventures. The remaining three percent is sent to the County landfill.
