News Review

8/2/12 Associated Press: Diverse history woven into RNC host city
We know that Tampa is a diverse, world-class city. Now, the world is starting to discover the same. The Associated Press highlighted Tampa’s diverse history -- from connections to U.S. Presidents, our rich heritage, and the many amazing attractions.

"It's coverage that you can't buy," said Travis Claytor, spokesman for the area's tourism bureau. "Every time they do a cut-away shot of the skyline of downtown Tampa or the Tampa Bay Times Forum, or show beauty shots of the beaches and the attractions, that's promoting the destination like we've never been able to promote it before. This is an opportunity that has never come along before, and it's priceless, to be honest with you." Read more.

8/1/12 Tampa Tribune: Most downtown Tampa businesses will brave the RNC

Downtown is going to be the center of activity during the Republican National Convention, and Mayor Buckhorn insists that downtown will be open for business even though it may not be business as usual. Downtown businesses were surveyed by the Tampa Downtown Partnership, and most indicated that they plan to remain open for the convention. Read more.

The list of open businesses and their hours will soon be available at http://www.tampasdowntown.com.

8/1/12 Tampa to provide RNC protesters with water, toilets and cooling misters

Even for native Tampans, the August heat can be tough to brave. To ensure that police, visitors, and protestors stay safe from the heat, the City of Tampa is working with partner organizations to supply 50,000 gallons of water. Additionally, 600 portable toilets and misting stations will also be available.

"I don't know that folks really comprehend the humidity and the heat and how quickly one can get dehydrated and disoriented, with potentially catastrophic results," Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said. Keeping people hydrated should reduce the stress on emergency medical responders and hospitals. Read more.

8/3/12 Tampa Bay Business Journal: Streetscaping, technology boost RNC ‘legacy'
The Republican National Convention will do more than bring 50,000 visitors, it will also leave behind several key improvement projects. Some are more obvious than others – like beautification and streetscaping – while others are harder to spot, like the millions spent on upgrades made by AT&T to boost Tampa’s wireless infrastructure. Read more about key RNC legacy projects.
