8/18/12 Top Story - Forbes: Republican National Convention Could Bring Tampa $173 Million
In a week, delegates, visitors, and media will be pouring into Tampa and spending an estimated $40 to $50 million on hotels, meals, transportation, gifts and other purchases. According to Tampa Bay Host Committee president Ken Jones, the largest sources of direct local spending are the Tampa Bay Host Committee, visitors, and security.

“Any way you look at it, the convention is going to be a shot in the arm for Tampa Bay’s economy and tourism base,” Jones Lang LaSalle research analyst Stephen Siena to the Tampa Bay Times.

8/13/12 Tampa Tribune: City primed for 5 days in the sun

Tampa Tribune columnist Steve Otto attended one of Mayor Buckhorn’s Republican National Convention Town Hall meetings last week:

“This week, Mayor Bob held three town meetings to outline what might be the most detailed and possibly best-laid plans of all time to handle the coming Republican National Convention right here in the Big Guava.

I went to his first gathering at The Florida Aquarium, where there was a lineup of department heads, each giving presentations on how their departments were ready for any contingency…

…[Mayor Buckhorn] also understands what this is all about and that it really has very little to do with politics. He knows that, for better or worse, it will be Tampa's moment — in this case five days — in the sun.”

8/15/12 WTSP: Tampa adds 782 trees in time for RNC

Mayor Buckhorn’s Changing Tampa’s Economic DNA plan includes a project called Opportunity Corridors, an effort to beautify our main transportation arteries and to use the beautification as an economic driver to transform Tampa. That vision came to life when the Mayor planted the 783nd tree in downtown to mark the completion of the project’s first phase.

"We will take this opportunity corridor strategy and we will it throughout the city and we will move from concentric circles around downtown out to MLK, out to Hillsborough Avenue, out to Sligh. We want every segment of this community to look as beautiful as what you see downtown and we want that sense of pride that pervades downtown to pervade Sulphur Springs," said Mayor Buckhorn.

8/15/12 Tampa Tribune: Officials peddle pedal-powered vehicles for RNC
Mayor Buckhorn was on hand to help roll out Humana’s Freewheeling pedibuses. The pedibuses seat 9 people, including a driver, and a fleet of 20 will be offering free rides in downtown Tampa during the week of the Republican National Convention. The pedibus route will run from the Straz Center to Ybor City. There will be three stations offering health screenings, fruit, and cold water along the route.

"It's a good way to get around in a congested environment," Buckhorn said. "And it's a great eye-catching tool. It'll add some pizzazz to the convention."

8/20/12 Bay News 9: Tampa's RNC call center begins 24/7 operations
This morning, Mayor Buckhorn officially opened the City of Tampa’s 24 hour call center that will operate until August 31 to answer resident questions and concerns regarding the Republican National Convention. Operators will be able to provide the latest information on street closures, parking, city services, and hospitality. The toll free number is 1-866-762-8687.
