With Mayor Iorio sounding the airhorn to start the race, the runners of the 13th Annual Tampa Police Memorial Run took to the pavement in Downtown Tampa and Bayshore Blvd in record numbers.

As I turned the southeast corner of District 3, I did not know what to expect. As my steps neared, I observed the stature of the artist meticulously placing each piece of tile in place to complete a face. Through the darkness of the early morning, his spotlights illuminated his shadow. As I walked closer, I was in awe of the magnificent artistry developing before my eyes. Pieces of tile in assorted sizes and colors formed into beautiful portraits.

In the Darkness of the Night
On any typical Tampa Saturday night while most of us are getting ready for bed, midnight officers are just getting started putting criminals out of work. Midnight officers are often the unsung heroes of the police department. Out of the public eye, these officers have a massive impact on crime. During the daylight hours, they sleep in rooms with thick blinds while their families go through their regular routines. They struggle to stay awake for normal activities on their days off. And they sit through lengthy court appearances in the “middle of their night’s sleep.” They are ensuring that Tampa’s citizens sleep safely in their beds at night.
