Mayor Bob Buckhorn
Last week, Mayor Buckhorn helped celebrate the grand opening of the Busch Gardens play space at International Plaza, and he even joined in on the fun himself.

"From the Desk of Mayor Buckhorn" is designed to give citizens greater insight into the Mayor's Office. Every week, Mayor Buckhorn will offer a snippet of what he's currently working on.

"HealthPlan Services' expansion is a big win for Tampa. They will create 1,000 new jobs and invest $34 million. It means a lot when companies who can locate or expand anywhere commit to Tampa, and that commitment is why Tampa is leading Florida out of the recession."

9/16: Tampa Bay Times: Biotech leaders look (way) ahead to bump tourism from Florida spotlight
Biotech leaders gathered in Tampa last week to celebrate and encourage the biotech industry to grow in Florida. In the last five years, Florida’s biotech industry has grown 60%, and just this summer, companies including Biologics Development Services, Synergy Health, and Bristol Myers Squibb have announced expansions in the Tampa area.

9/18: Tampa Tribune: Gov. Scott announces insurer to add 1,000 jobs in Tampa
Mayor Buckhorn joined Governor Scott and other elected officials last week to announce that Tampa-based company HealthPlan Services will expand and create an additional 1,000 jobs.

9/19: Tampa Tribune: They do NOT: Number of young singles growing here, nationwide
More and more people are not getting married, and those young, single millennials are choosing to live in Tampa. As the Tribune’s Wiatrowski writes, “The growth in Tampa’s never-married population has coincided with the expansion of residential construction in the Channel District, Hyde Park and downtown.”

9/19: Tampa Bay Times: After decade of false starts, new team takes on the Heights in Tampa
After a decade, the Heights project is finally poised to take off. Next to the property, the City of Tampa is renovating Water Works Park, and Richard Gonzmart is restoring the historic Water Works building, transforming it into a new restaurant called Ulele.
