Emergency Preperation KitEach year, as we enter into another tropical storm season, it is important to get prepared. Should a storm threaten our community, we want to make sure you have what you need to weather a storm.

The Tampa area has not suffered a direct strike from a hurricane since 1921, so few people living here today have experienced the damage and disruption one of these storms can cause. The first step in storm readiness is to know what flood evacuation zone you live in. You can find out by picking up a hurricane guide at any fire station, library or going on-line to www.tampagov.net/hurricanes.

If you live in an evacuation zone or manufactured housing, you should plan now where you will go when it is time to evacuate. You don’t have to go very far, just make plans to go to a friend's or relative's house located outside the evacuation zones. If you do not live in an evacuation zone and your house is fairly solid, then be prepared to stay there during the storm. When it comes to hurricane evacuation the saying is “Run from the water, hide from the wind.” In other words evacuate to avoid the storm surge that accompanies hurricanes. Storm surge is the number one killer during hurricane landfall.
