The Tampa Water Department is helping its customers save water. The Department is teaming up with the Hillsborough County Extension Office’s Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) Water-Wise Program to provide free micro-irrigation retrofit workshops in Tampa.

Participants will learn the proper techniques and procedures to convert a traditional in-ground irrigation system into a more water efficient micro-irrigation system. Attendees will also learn about a variety of low volume and micro-irrigation products.

Two workshop dates are available this fall:

City of Tampa Water Department customers and Hillsborough County residents will receive one free retrofit kit per household. Kits are available to attendees living in other counties for $20 each. Seating is limited. Pre-registration is required. Call (813) 744-5519, Ext. 144, or email CarverMS@HillsboroughCounty.org to register.

Not sure which sections of your yard could benefit from "going micro"? Tampa Water Department customers with functional in-ground irrigation systems using potable (drinking) water may qualify for a free Sensible Sprinkling Irrigation Efficiency Evaluation. Following an on-site inspection by an experienced irrigation evaluator, Sensible Sprinkling participants receive a detailed written report that includes: a seasonal sprinkling schedule for each zone and site specific recommendations on improving water efficiency and reducing water use. Limited funding may be available to provide rebates to customers who implement recommendations provided in the evaluation report, such as retrofitting the system with drip or micro-irrigation.

The FYN Program is designed to educate homeowners and other community members about the benefits of Florida-friendly landscaping. The Water-Wise Program is sponsored by a grant from the Hillsborough County Water Resource Services and workshops are sponsored by Hillsborough County Water Resource Services and the Tampa Water Department. Visit http://hillsborough_fyn.ifas.ufl.edu/ for more information on programs, services and workshops available from the Hillsborough County Extension Office.
