Learn about the Geospatial Revolution

  Geospatial Technology

What is geospatial technology, geomatics, or spatial information?

Learn about the Geospatial Revolution.

Geospatial technology is for measuring, analyzing, and visualizing earth features. It includes three different technologies for mapping these features: GIS (geographic information systems), GPS (global positioning systems), and RS (remote sensing).

Most of the information we have about our world contains a location reference, placing that information at some point on the globe. On the basis of common geography, GIS can help us visualize relationships between data that otherwise might not be apparent. We can find out where things are, count them, and create maps and report graphics that help us see how these things are related. So, GIS can reveal important new information that leads to better decisions.

Visit GIS.com to learn more about GIS.

The City of Tampa began collecting and storing geospatial information in digital formats in 1976. These initial GIS efforts were textual; graphic display of City of Tampa geospatial information began in 1994. The City formally recognized the importance of Geospatial Information System technology in the 2004 GIS charter. (PDF)

Geospatial System Standards

GIS Standards

City of Tampa GIS has published Geospatial Systems Standards. Compliance with these data standards will help to facilitate data sharing, integration, and compatibility within the GIS system.

By acting to maintain high quality and current GIS data, credibility is established and users can have a high level of confidence in the data source. Without this commitment to quality, the value of the city’s GIS investment is quickly degraded.

DOR Project

Through the use of GIS the City of Tampa is able to meet DOR requirements and established deadlines for address update, correction, and validation. GIS is the technology used to insure we collect all revenue due to the City from the Communications Services Tax and the Insurance Premium Surtax Funds.

The "DOR Project" is mandated by Florida Statute Section 202.22(2)(b)1 for municipalities that choose to assess the Communications Services Tax (CST), authorized under Florida Statute Section 202.19. The City of Tampa has chosen to assess the CST, effective 10/1/2001, and has collected approximately $28 million dollars annually.

Additionally, the DOR address database must now be used to facilitate the collection of insurance premium surtax funds, which are also submitted to the City per Florida Statutes 175 and 185. As a result, the City of Tampa received in excess of $6 million dollars last year in insurance premium surtax funds. Consequently, keeping the address database current is state law, as well as good business practice, as every address is a revenue source.
