  12/16/11 Top Story - St Petersburg Times: New penalty targets drivers accused of buying drugs or picking up prostitutes


In a 6-1 vote, Tampa City Council approved a measure aimed at cracking down on street-level prostitution and drug dealing. Neighborhood leaders showed support for the ordinance, which imposes steeper fines for drivers arrested for drugs or prostitution. Mayor Buckhorn said:
"Passing this ordinance sends a clear message that the City of Tampa is committed to the safety and improvement of the quality of life in our neighborhoods . At the end of the day, these offenders will have to go home, without their vehicles, and face their families and the consequences of breaking the law. This is one of the best tools we have to help combat prostitution and that's why cities across the country have adopted similar measures."

  12/18/11 Charlotte Observer: Before spotlight shines on Charlotte, Tampa leads off
  The Charlotte Observer, whose namesake will be hosting the Democratic National Convention next summer, printed a feature piece on the 2012 Republican National Convention, which highlighted it's impact on Tampa's economy:
"Even for a place that hosted four Super Bowls, a World Series and the Stanley Cup, next year's Republican National Convention is a big deal…The bay area is flexing its big-game muscles for an event expected to draw 50,000 people and a worldwide audience…"

  12/13/11 Tampa Tribune: Riverwalk may reach Tampa port terminal

Mayor Buckhorn's proposal to extend Tampa's Riverwalk behind the Channelside Bay Plaza and through a port terminal is one step closer to becoming a reality. During a workshop on the subject, consultants presented proposals that could make the extension possible. Mayor Buckhorn said after: "I think this is a good start and the potential for new (Channelside) ownership offers opportunities to do this." Read more

  12/13/11 Mayor Buckhorn dedicates new Channel District Park

Downtown Tampa's newest park has been officially dedicated by Mayor Bob Buckhorn. Washington Street Park is the result of the public participation process, which responded to the neighborhood’s needs. The half-acre nautical-themed park has oversized sea grass sculptures, a large canvas shade structure and plaza, a lawn area, a non-traditional play area, and a dog run. The design allows for flexible use of the plaza and lawn areas, accommodating gatherings of various sizes as well as individual pursuits. The park is enhanced at night with special light features, including spot lights and LED fiber optic lights embedded into the main entry columns.
