  In a time when municipalities are struggling, Mayor Buckhorn is beating the odds in Tampa. Not only has he worked to streamline the city’s budget, but he hasn’t let a lack of funds damper efforts to revitalize Tampa’s neighborhoods and urban core. Friday’s Tampa Tribune editorial highlights his efforts:

“Tampa residents should be pleased Mayor Bob Buckhorn is not letting fiscal woes keep him from seeking to energize the city and brighten its economic prospects. He has found low- and no-cost ways to bring development to the urban core that will make it a more vibrant place to live, work and visit. There is a feeling Tampa is a city on the move.   1/28/12 Tampa Bay Times: Soaking up Tampa's dynamic new waterfront
  The Tampa Bay Times wrote Saturday that Gasparilla provides the perfect opportunity to soak up all the changes that have improved downtown Tampa. Mayor Buckhorn is determined to keep that momentum going:

“In the last month alone, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has announced a new, permanent lighting exhibit showcasing the downtown bridges. He chose a firm to redevelop the 107-year-old federal courthouse, which has been shuttered for years, into a luxury hotel. He started work on a new section of the Riverwalk. And he selected a group headed by the Columbia Restaurant, a Tampa institution, to remake the historic Water Works Park into an open-air restaurant on the downtown riverfront.” Read the full editorial.

  1/27/12 Tampa Tribune: Transportation chief says connector is 'envy' of nation
 

Mayor Buckhorn joined US Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, and Congresswoman Kathy Castor to highlight the economic impact of the new I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector. The mayor stressed that the project will be an important economic development tool, particularly for Tampa’s port:

"When the connector is finished, trucks leaving the Port of Tampa will skip the five traffic lights they now face on the way to I-4. Planners estimate 11,000 trucks a day will use the road. "They will be able to get from the Port of Tampa to the state of Maine without hitting a traffic light," Buckhorn said. Read more in the Tampa Tribune.

  1/26/12 Tampa Bay Times: Columbia Restaurant owner picked to renovate Tampa's historic Water Works Building
 

The historic Water Works Building on Hillsborough river will soon be transformed into a seafood restaurant, chophouse and oyster bar with an outdoor café. Richard Gonzmart, owner of the Columbia, will be call this new concept Ciao's. Its location next to the five-acre Water Works Park and planned additions of boat slips and pavilions will make this a premier destination on the north end of the Riverwalk.

"I can't tell you how many people stop me and say, 'I have a boat. I have no place to go in downtown Tampa', " Mayor Buckhorn said. "This will give us one more place that people can come and enjoy." Read the full story in the Tampa Bay Times.

  1/25/12 Fox 13: New Riverwalk extension announced
  Mayor Buckhorn announced construction on the second to last piece of the Tampa Riverwalk. The new CapTrust section will include an overwater walkway around the CapTrust building, connecting the Riverwalk to MacDill Park. Construction is expected to be completed by next year.

"This will transform downtown Tampa in ways that we can't even imagine," Mayor Buckhorn said. "You'll see bars, restaurants, people walking, not having to get in their cars and go to Channelside, they'll be able to walk from the performing arts center after a show and go all the way and have a drink in Channelside."
