2/10/12 Top Story | Tampa Bay Times: Tampa riverfront's future lies in redevelopment, study suggests
A panel from the Urban Land Institute Rose Center for Public Leadership in Land Use concluded its study visit to Tampa by presenting recommendations for redeveloping the riverfront, specifically the area Northwest of downtown, which includes West Tampa.

After hearing Friday's recommendations, members of the standing-room-only crowd at the convention center generally praised the ideas.

"I've been wiping tears out of my eyes," said Mike Vannetta, president of the Old West Tampa Neighborhood Association and Crimewatch. "This plan here is going to do wonders for us."

Buckhorn said the plan offers Tampa a historic opportunity to expand its downtown in a way that creates life and activity around an underused stretch of the river.

"Twenty years from now, they will say about this moment, in this year, that this is where we changed Tampa's history," he said. "Our job is not to put these plans on the shelf when these folks leave. ... Our job is to go execute it. This is where it begins." Read more about the recommendations.

  2/13/12 Tampa Tribune: Prompt permitting

Mayor Buckhorn recently announced the City of Tampa is switching to an electronic permitting system, Accela, which will streamline, modernize, and speed up the process. The mayor understands that time is money and Tampa’s competitiveness hinges on the City’s ability to efficiently handle permits.

It is designed to help you get a quick grip on the process and help the local enforcers get a handle on what you want to do. Soon, the experience of getting a building permit should be much less confrontational and frustrating.

Getting a permit for building a simple deck in the backyard could be three times faster. Permits for a complex project could be finished 10 times faster. The change will be good for everyone involved in business and construction. Read more

2/9/12 Tampa Bay Times: USF's new downtown Tampa medical simulation center is opening for business
University of South Florida’s CAMLS (Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation) has opened its doors in downtown Tampa. Though the official ribbon cutting is about a month away, students and doctors have already started working in the center, which is the largest of its kind in the world.

“Buckhorn expects CAMLS to generate a short-term economic boost from people training at the facility using downtown hotels and restaurants. Longer-term, the goal is to attract companies such as medical device manufacturers to set up in the area.

Buckhorn recently traveled to Israel to meet with executives from Simbionix, a manufacturer of medical training simulators, including some used at CAMLS.

"CAMLS is probably the most important development in downtown Tampa in at least 20 years," Buckhorn said. "It's a game-changer." Read more.

2/8/12 Kiplinger ranks Tampa as one of the 10 Great Cities for Starting a Business

Tampa's tropical weather makes it a top tourist destination but it is the City's business-friendly climate that has been attracting entrepreneurs. Mayor Buckhorn has worked diligently to streamline Tampa’s permitting process to attract new business and those looking to relocate, as well as encourage growth for local companies. Kiplinger noted these efforts when including Tampa on its “10 Great Cities for Starting a Business" list.

“Local government is particularly business-friendly, promising tax credits to businesses that locate in certain areas or work in one of a number of high-demand industries, including life sciences and sustainable energy.” Read more about Tampa's ranking.
