Mayor Buckhorn took a literal approach to getting his hands dirty when he rode on the back of a solid waste vehicle, picking up garbage in Seminole Heights. You can watch all the action on next month's episode of "The Mayor's Hour".

3/26/12 MSNBC: Turning historic buildings into fine hotels
Around the country, cities and developers are working together to repurpose historic buildings into hotels. MSNBC takes a look at the this trend, which is being driven by less availability of financing for new construction and the fact that of these buildings are in prime locations. Tampa’s Old Federal Courthouse building is featured along with similar projects in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.

“The allure of a historic building is its grandeur, its location and its architecture,” said Bruce Ford, senior vice president of Lodging Econometrics, which tracks hospitality-industry transactions. “To integrate that into a modern development can be a home run if it’s done right.” Read more.

3/23/12 Tampa Tribune: City seeks money from feds to finish Riverwalk
Finishing the Tampa Riverwalk will be transformative to Tampa’s downtown. That’s why Mayor Buckhorn has put it high on his downtown to-do list and approached the Federal Department of Transportation once again for the funds to get the job done.

"By the time we're done, that river will be the center of our downtown, not the western edge," Buckhorn told the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce this week. "In 10 years, downtown will be radically different." Read the full story.

3/22/12 Fox 13: Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn urges IRS to do more to stop tax fraud
Last year, the Tampa Police Department’s Operation Rainmaker uncovered $130 million in tax fraud. Mayor Buckhorn is calling on the IRS to get involved and to help reduce the number of cases local police departments, like Tampa’s, have to handle.

Buckhorn said most anyone would sacrifice two or three days getting their return back for the comfort of knowing their names and their identities have not been hijacked. "That their refund is not going to fund some thug out there, who's just going to use that money for more criminal activities," Buckhorn said. Watch the report.

3/20/12 Tampa Tribune editorial: Tallahassee success story
Mayor Buckhorn partnered with State Representative Dana Young in an effort to ensure Tampa taxpayers have control of the water that they paid to have produced. The result was the passage of House Bill 639, which will protect cities, benefit the environment, and allow the City of Tampa to get reclaimed water to more customers.

“This is no small matter. In recent years, private companies, state agencies and politicians from other areas have targeted Tampa's wastewater for use without regard for the city's plans to use the water for irrigation systems.

As Buckhorn put it, before the passage of the bill, the city "had no certainty that the reclaimed water Tampa's taxpayers paid to produce would not be unilaterally redirected, but now, we can expand our reclaimed infrastructure without concern. Read the editorial.
