4/1/12 Tampa Bay Times: Buckhorn lays solid foundation for meeting challenges
Mayor Buckhorn was officially sworn in as the 56th Mayor of Tampa on April 1, 2011. This Tampa Bay Times editorial takes a look at all that he has accomplished so far, and what is yet to come.

Still, Buckhorn has worked quickly to lay a new foundation for the three years remaining in his term. He asked a panel of developers to recommend ways to flatten the city's regulatory process, using down time in this slow economy to make the city more competitive once concrete starts pouring again. He also brought in the nation's best urban designers to craft a first-ever master plan for the downtown neighborhoods.

Buckhorn is talking up the need to grow and diversify Tampa's economy through partnerships in commercialized health care and other high-tech industries. And he hasn't missed a chance to exploit the media attention for the Republican National Convention, which will be hosted in Tampa.

The Tampa Tribune editorial page turned an eye towards to the Republican National Convention. Hosting an event of this magnitude does not come without challenges, but we cannot let that overshadow the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase Tampa on the national stage.

There is no question the convention will be a stressful challenge for our community. But it should also generate excitement and business opportunities. Naturally, people are going to fret about the possible inconveniences, but the convention holds enormous promise. Let's be ready to take full advantage of what should be a transformative week for our city. Read the editorial.
