5/13/12 Tampa Bay Times: Tampa puts landscaping work in high gear as Republican National Convention approaches
Mayor Buckhorn is fast tracking his Opportunity Corridors project, which is an effort to beautify Tampa’s major gateways and was part the plan during his campaign. Improvements have already begun on some of Tampa’s most traveled streets, starting with those that lead into downtown Tampa. The Opportunity Corridors Project will continue by branching out in concentric circles.

"We have a city government on steroids right now. We are really moving full throttle," Buckhorn said. "Certainly it was a priority for me that we start in the downtown. Because the entire world will be looking at downtown Tampa." Read more.

5/11/12 Tampa Tribune: New course for Florida Aquarium
Before the Channel District was home to nearly 6,000 residential units, an entertainment complex, cruise ship terminals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning, it was an empty warehouse district until 1995 when the Florida Aquarium was built. The Rising Tides campaign, which is aiming to raise $15 million for an aquarium expansion, received a large boost this week with the $1 million donation from Carol and Barney Barnett of Publix. The expansion plan includes an education center, dining hall, and space to host traveling exhibits.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn does not exaggerate when he calls The Florida Aquarium a key factor in "the resurgence of downtown." That may even understate its role. Read more.

5/9/12 WTSP: Home rental interest picking up for GOP Convention
Republican National Convention visitors are starting to snatch up available real estate for the convention week. Interest in renting available properties, particularly those close to downtown, is only expected to increase in the coming weeks. This is great news for local real estate managers. YborHouse. com owner Pat Torrence has already rented 12 homes from his inventory.

"This convention literally took us from in the red to in the black," Pat Torrence told 10 News. Watch the full report.
