  5/23/12 Top Story | Tampa Tribune: Sulphur Springs gets community center
  Mayor Buckhorn cut the ribbon on the new Springhill Community Center in Sulphur Springs in front of a crowd of 200. The community center design includes a gymnasium, warming kitchen, computer classroom, multi-purpose room, splash pad, playground, and a new sports field. It is also home to the Virginia Rivers Creative Arts Studio, which has three classrooms and a high tech performance workshop dedicated to theater and performing arts programs. In addition to performing arts, the new community center will serve both youth and adults' social, recreational, health, and educational needs through a variety of programs and classes including an after-school program, created in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa.   5/23/12 ABC Action News: US Special Forces 'save' Mayor Bob Buckhorn in mock battle in downtown Tampa
  Special Operations Forces rescued Mayor Buckhorn after he was taken hostage during a capabilities demonstration that was part of the International Special Operations Forces Conference. Ten different countries participated in the exercise, which included parachutes, a MH-47 Chinook, and a CV-22 Osprey.

"I've fended off pirates. I'm glad we have these guys on our side. They're the best in the world. They saved me. I'm not sure the voters appreciate that, but my wife and kids do," Buckhorn said. "That is our family. They get to come out and demonstrate what they do everyday for us so that we're safer. I love them to death and I know everyone in this community does too." Watch the video.

  5/25/12 Tampa Tribune: New segment of Tampa's Riverwalk opens
  Mayor Buckhorn moved closer to his goal of completing the Riverwalk when he cut the ribbon on two new segments last Friday. The Brorein Street Underpass and the Brownstone Segment connect pedestrians from the CapTrust building to USF Park. Construction on the next segment, which will link to MacDill Park to the Brownstone segment, is already underway. Mayor Buckhorn has put in an application for federal funding to complete the last two remaining pieces.

"This gets us one step closer to the completion of this Riverwalk," Buckhorn said. "The development of the riverfront will be the best thing we can do for downtown Tampa." Read more.

  5/25/12 Tampa Bay Times: Tampa domestic partnership registry to open June 25
  Tampa's Domestic Partnership Registry will officially begin on June 25 at 9 a.m. Registration will give couples the right to visit each other in the hospital, take part in the education of a partner's child, and oversee funeral arrangements for each other, among other things. Couples do not need to reside in Tampa to register. Learn more at

  5/29/12 InVision Tampa Knowledge Exchange Forum
  Tomorrow night, Mayor Buckhorn invites you to the third of four Knowledge Exchange Forums to help the City formulate a downtown master plan. The forum's focus will be public and private perspectives on economic development in our urban core. The meeting will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be held at the Tampa Convention Center, located at 333 South Franklin Street Tampa, FL.
