HIGH BILL?  Is this month’s City of Tampa Utility bill significantly higher than usual?  If it is, there are several steps you can take on your own to resolve the situation.

First, examine your bill and make sure it’s what we call a “read” bill. The City of Tampa reads most water meters every other month (bi-monthly), and sends an “average” bill in months the meter is not read, and a “read” bill in the month the meter is read.

If your high bill is a “read” bill, it will show a Meter Reading in the “Meter Reading” column, and the 100 Cu. Ft. Used figure in the “100 Cu. Ft. Used” column will not have an “A” after it, the “A” standing for average.

If your high bill is an “average” bill, call us at Utility Customer Service for advice, (813) 274-8811.

If your high bill is a “read” bill, the consumption shown is your consumption for the past two months according to the meter reading shown on your bill. Locate your water meter, and obtain a reading (it reads just like the odometer of your car, except we drop the last two digits which are fractional parts of a unit of consumption). While you are jotting down the reading, watch the red or white triangular leak indicator on the face of your meter. With all taps off inside your house, the leak indicator should not be moving.

Now, compare your reading to the reading shown on your bill.

If the reading you obtained from your meter is higher than that shown on your bill, it means that our reading was correct. Movement of the leak indicator will tell you whether the higher than normal consumption, or wastage of water that you have experienced was during the last two-month reading period, or is currently ongoing. Once you have your leaks repaired, please contact us at (813) 274-8811, and we will send you information on how to handle your high bill---who to get in touch with to make sure you get all the credits that may be available to you, and who to contact if the bill becomes a hardship and you need to make arrangements for installation payments to keep the service on.

If the reading you obtained from your meter is lower than that shown on your bill, it means we have made a meter reading error, and we will begin processing an over read adjustment on your account. Please enter the following information so that we may begin this process, and get in touch with you if we need further information:
