RESPONSIBILITIES: - Performs responsible professional work involving biological and chemical research, testing, and analysis of environmental samples and/or wastewater.
- Plans, organizes and initiates research projects relating to environmental assessment of effects of wastewater discharge on the aquatic environment.
- Plans, reviews and participates in performance of specialized biological and chemical studies and research projects related to determination of effects of wastewater effluent on bays/surrounding areas; scuba dives for samples, where required.
- Independently conducts specialized field studies, records data, and prepares reports on species of animals, plants, insects, or marine life in their natural surroundings.
- Plans, reviews, and participates in performance of physical, chemical, and bacteriological tests; reviews and participates in examinations or analyses relating to municipal wastewater operations.
- Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots scientific instrumentation.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Reasonable initiative and independent judgment are required in the selection of work methods and formulation of recommendations for consideration by supervisors and other high-level departmental employees.
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field, and one (1) year experience in biological or chemical research and laboratory analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Note: An acceptable transcript of college coursework/ credits may be requested.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Environmental analytical instrumentation experience.LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License. Appropriate Diver’s Certification may be required.
EXAMINATION: Evaluation of education and experience. Must pass federal background check for Port of Tampa Access. It is the policy of the City of Tampa that no applicant can be hired until an acceptable report of their background is received.
