SALARY RANGE:

(022) $15.27 - $21.69 an hour     $31,761.60 - $45,115.20 a year

JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will be responsible for performing lead tasks of average difficulty at an assigned recreation center, community center, preschool or playground.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinating activities of an assigned recreation area.

  • Planning, promoting, conducting, teaching, and overseeing play activities, team sports, after school programs, crafts, contests, and other activities.

  • Assisting participants in use of computer labs.

  • Conferring with supervisor about organizational administration problems.

  • Transporting participants in department vehicle or travel between sites may be required.

  • Teaching reading readiness, math concepts, and safety.

  • Promoting good public relations in the community.

  • Preparing promotional materials such as fliers and posters.

  • Assisting clubs and civic groups in conducting recreational activities.

  • Recommending programs based on needs analysis of the community.

  • Interpreting departmental policies and rules for the general public.

  • Overseeing lower level recreation personnel, and custodial personnel.

  • Providing input into performance evaluations for lower level staff.

  • Overseeing security and building and equipment maintenance.

  • Inspecting recreational facilities, apparatus and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness, performs field maintenance when required.

  • Maintaining inventory of supplies; submits requisitions for needed repairs and supplies.

  • Operating audiovisual equipment such as tape players, film and slide projectors for recreational shows and productions.

  • Maintaining attendance and financial records and prepares reports.

  • Collecting money for classes and purchases supplies.

  • Attempting to trace and collect delinquent fees.

  • Attending and conducting sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics; administers first aid.

  • Performing related work as required.

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of techniques relating to a wide variety of organized recreation activities.

  • Working knowledge of rules and conduct of a variety of sports and games.

  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of computer skills.

  • Knowledge of records keeping and report writing.

  • Ability to stimulate interest in recreational activities for all age groups.

  • Ability to oversee the work of others.

  • Ability to provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities.

  • Ability to maintain records and compile reports.

  • Ability to administer first aid.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, civic groups and the general public.

  • Ability to perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion.

  • Ability to operate a light motor vehicle if required.

  • Ability to work nights, weekends holidays.

  • Skill in administering first aid.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of recreational equipment and facilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two (2) years of college and three (3) years experience in organized recreation programs, preferably in an instructional capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Possession of: Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates within six (6) months of appointment.

  • A valid Florida driver's license; a Florida CDL Class "C" with passenger endorsement within six (6) months of appointment.
