(018) $13.29 - $18.91 an hour     $27,643.20 - $39,332.80 a year

JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will be responsible for planning, promoting and conducting recreational activities at an assigned recreation center, community center, preschool or playground.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, promotes and conducts recreational activities.

  • Teaches and oversees games and sports activities.

  • Organizes sports, social activities and special events.

  • Assists participants in use of computer labs.

  • Schedules center and playground activities.

  • May be required to transport participants in department vehicle or travel between sites.

  • Maintains discipline at assigned area and confers with parents regarding discipline problems.

  • Teaches fair play and sportsmanship.

  • Administers minor first aid; promotes safety.

  • Maintains athletic equipment; performs building and field maintenance as necessary.

  • Receives monies from class participants; writes receipts for supplies and equipment; restocks supplies.

  • Oversees operation and performs maintenance of/on assigned area as required.

  • Attends and conducts sessions at meetings, workshops and training clinics.

  • Coordinates special programs, events, and travel arrangements; coordinates programs and activities with coworkers and supervisor.

  • Promotes good public relations with community.

  • Performs clerical work such as RecTrac entry, typing or filing; orders supplies, equipment, etc.

  • Inspects recreational facilities, apparatus, and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness.

  • Enforces proper safety practices and occupational safety rules and regulations to prevent hazardous conditions and protect employees and the public from harm.

  • Performs related work as required.

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of techniques relating to a wide variety of recreation activities.

  • Knowledge of computers and computer programs, and basic knowledge of record keeping.

  • Knowledge of instructional techniques.

  • Ability to provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities.

  • Ability to provide instruction to participants engaged in group games and sports.

  • Ability to counsel and advise participants.

  • Ability to stimulate public participation and support for recreational activities.

  • Ability to maintain records and compile reports.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, civic groups, and the general public.

  • Ability to perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion.

  • Ability to operate a light motor vehicle if required.

  • Skill in administering first aid and CPR.

  • Skill in the care and maintenance of facilities, grounds, and recreational equipment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of one (1) year of college and one (1) year of experience in organized recreational programs, preferably in an instructional capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:

  • Possession of Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License; a Florida Class “C” License within 6 months of employment.

    EXAMINATION:

    Evaluation of training and experience.
