Drafting Technician I

(023) $15.86 - $22.53 an hour     $32,988.80 - $46,862.40 a year

JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will perform technical drafting work involving the use of graphic portrayal techniques, methods and procedures in documenting and communicating basic engineering information.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preparing Maintenance of Traffic Plans, cross sections and roadway construction plans relating to transportation infrastructure and traffic/public safety issues.
  • Assisting other Drafting Technicians with field measurements and field review.
  • Preparing Computer Automated Design (CAD) maps, sketches, and presentation materials, using advanced computer software including AutoCAD, and ArcGIS.
  • Reviewing, scanning, and cataloging electronically, all Central Files documents, including roadway as-built drawings, COT Buildings, Park facilities, Maintenance facilities, Parking structures and lots.
  • Maintaining historical records, as-built drawings, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) plans (within City limits), aerial images, photos, presentation boards, and soil boring data.
  • Scanning historical as-built records, review for quality assurance, and digitally cataloging all Central Files documents for future import into the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system.
  • Maintaining all Stormwater as-built records for roadway designs.
  • Assisting the general public and engineering customers with Central Files record requests electronically and counter service.
  • Assisting other departments with graphic layouts, design materials, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Developing electronic base maps for Tampa Police Department (TPD) to utilize in developing collision diagrams.
  • Developing Traffic Control Plans for TPD Special Operations Unit to utilize for the Special Event planning.
  • Collecting, assembling and, as necessary, processing data and information needed for preparing drawings and reports.
  • Maintaining records regarding work activities.
  • Performing related work as required and having a general knowledge of Microsoft Office products including MS Access, MS Word, & MS Excel.

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITTIES:
  • Knowledge of basic drafting techniques, including a limited number of standardized drawing techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design; symbols, terminology and accepted standards used in preparing engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of systems of the particular field of engineering to which assigned; charting and graphing procedures and practices.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations using standardized tables and formulas.
  • Ability to prepare drawings that are neat, accurate, appropriately dimensioned, and logically arranged utilizing the methods and techniques of engineering drafting.
  • Ability to print neatly and legibly, in accordance with good engineering lettering practices.
  • Ability to prepare drawings from survey notes, plats, and legal descriptions; prepare as-built drawings; adjust/transpose drawings to scale.
  • Ability to verify accuracy of data against source documents.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions/standardized procedures.
  • Able to communicate effectively both written and verbally especially of a technical nature.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to clearly compose and interpret technical correspondence related to identification and location of utility infrastructure.
  • Skill in the use and care of engineering drafting tools, materials, and equipment; computer aided design.

    QUALIFICATIONS: High-school graduation with completion of one (1) year of college in engineering,drafting, commercial art/design, or related subjects, and one (1) year of experience in mapping, drafting and/or computer aided design; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Note: An acceptable transcript of college coursework/credits may be requested.

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License may be required.

    EXAMINATION:Evaluation of training and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
