Deputy City Clerk
FLSA: Exempt

(MA ) $54,329.60 - $85,259.20 a year

JOB PURPOSE: The Deputy City Clerk position is highly responsible administrative and supervisory work serving as a principal assistant to the City Clerk.

An employee in this class, under direction of the City Clerk, performs work of considerable difficulty requiring the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment. Work involves activities related to administrative support functions for the office, budget preparation, bill pay, oversight of Code Enforcement Board public hearing and code enforcement case process, oversight of office coverage for City Council offices, administering oaths in the absence
of the City Clerk, attending City Council meetings and preparing the Action Summary and Minutes from the meetings. Employee is also involved in Enterprise Content Management initiatives for the City of Tampa.


  • Supervises the activities and process of the Code Enforcement Board function.
  • Supervises the reception function of the City Council reception office and certain administrative functions.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; assigns, develops and evaluates staff.
  • Develops policies and procedures applicable to the City Clerk's Office.
  • Manages the City Clerk's Office budget and bill pay.
  • Prepares legal advertisements for public hearings, ordinances, and re-zonings.
  • Attends regular City Council meetings and prepares the Action Summary and Minutes from the meetings.
  • Serves as City Clerk's representative to the ITSC Steering Committee.
  • Participates in the Enterprise Content Management(ECM)initiatives,i.e., project development,agenda management, code enforcement case files, etc.
  • Troubleshoots problems as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary.

  • Considerable knowledge of modem office practices; administrative principles, practices,procedures and methods.
  • Working knowledge of legal advertising requirements; municipal administration and organization; minutes preparation; modern management practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, staff and the public
  • Ability to effectively supervise, organize and direct employees in a manner to promote optimum performance.
  • Skill in: research and analysis of data.

    SUGGESTED MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in business or public administration or a related field, and a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a City Clerk or Deputy City Clerk, including supervisory experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.


  • Possession of Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) certification.
  • Two years current or past membership with the Florida Association of City Clerks or membership in a similar clerk-related professional association is preferred.

    EXAMINATION: Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in pre-employment processing.
