February 21, 2013 - Mayor Buckhorn will cut the ribbon on the completed New Tampa Boulevard Bridge on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. The ribbon cutting will take place on the West Meadows side of the bridge, at the intersection of Meadow Pine Drive and New Tampa Boulevard.
"The New Tampa Boulevard Bridge has been eagerly anticipated, and when combined with the widening along Bruce B. Downs, it will give the residents of New Tampa the traffic relief they deserve. The project gives motorists, pedestrians, and even first responders an alternative route to take," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Over the long term, the bridge and the convenience it provides to the surrounding neighborhoods will improve the quality of life for area residents."
The bridge is anticipated to be open shortly after the ribbon cutting on February 27, 2013. Construction began in May 2011, and was not scheduled to be complete until July 2013. The total cost for the bridge is $12.8 million.
The 0.7 mile bridge spanning over I-75 connects Commerce Park Boulevard in Tampa Palms with New Tampa Boulevard in West Meadows. It includes a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side and an 8-foot wide multi-use trail on the north side, which will allow neighborhood pedestrian and bicycle traffic to safely cross I-75 without using Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
The New Tampa Boulevard Bridge provides an easterly and westerly connection between Bearss Ave. and SR. 56. This connection allows motorists with local destinations an option other than traveling through the I-75/Bruce B. Downs interchange. It also improves emergency access for the area.
