PREVIOUS RELEASE
Noxious Fume Forces Evacuation of Downtown High Rise

Date: 4/9/13, 1:15pm

Location: Park Tower, 400 Tampa Street, Tampa

Air conditioning repair work caused the release of noxious fumes on the 5th floor parking garage of Park Tower. It created a foul odor and became a respiratory irritant for six people working in the building. Two were transported to Tampa General Hospital as a precautionary measure. One complained of trouble breathing and the other of chest pain. The other four workers were treated at the scene and declined to be transported to a hospital. Tampa Fire Rescue evacuated all 35 floors and is still testing air samples on each floor. Once the testing is complete and the air is deemed safe, TFR will reopen the building.
Workers were in the process of removing the chiller from the air conditioning system when the incident occurred. It appears residual refrigerant was released and caused the fume.

Tampa Police have closed two blocks of North Tampa Street from East Twiggs Street to Kennedy Boulevard. Madison Street is also closed from North Tampa Street to North Franklin Street.
