VEHICLE: Tractor - 2005 Freightliner, OH/PVL5955, Trailer - 2007 Vanguard, OK/8307JX

DETAILS: On 05-11-13 at approx 2311 hrs. the driver of a semi tractor/trailer exited north bound I75 at the Bruce B Downs Blvd exit ramp. The semi driver failed to stop for the red light at Bruce B Downs Blvd as he thought he was on an extension of the interstate and not a ramp. Upon observing his error, the driver locked his brakes and slid across the intersection striking three vehicles that were stopped for a red light south bound on Bruce B Downs Blvd. The semi continued west bound until leaving the road-way on the west side of Bruce B Downs Blvd where it overturned. The trailers load (dry freight) also partially spilled from it. Two of the vehicles that were struck were dragged along by the semi and partially trapped beneath its overturned trailer. Tampa Fire/Rescue responded and extracted the drivers from the trapped vehicles. The drivers of all three struck vehicles were transported to area hospitals for minor/non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was cited for failure to stop for red light. The total estimated damage $100,000.
