Volunteers Needed for Veterans Wheelchair Games in Tampa

May 28, 2013 - This summer, Tampa will once again be in the national spotlight. This time it is because Tampa has been honored by being selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) to host the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Taking place from July 13-18, 600-700 veterans with disabilities will meet in Tampa to compete in the largest annual wheelchair sporting event in the world (even larger than the International Paralympics).

Veterans will compete in 17 events, including air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, motorized wheelchair rally, nine-ball, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting, weightlifting, and wheelchair slalom. As part of the event a special “Kids Day” featuring activities for local children with disabilities will also be held. We expect over 2,000 visitors for this event and, most will be participating in or attending activities in the downtown Tampa area.

To make this a successful event, 3,000 volunteers will be needed to help in all areas such as selling food, scorekeeping and timing events, announcers, data and engineering, handling equipment, wheelchair repair, graphic arts, weighing in athletes, communications, greeting people at the airport and hotels, and a wide variety of other jobs. Each volunteer will be asked to contribute four hours of time, and will receive two hours of training in June.

If you are interested in volunteering (or know someone that may be interested) to help make this and the Kids Day a huge success, you may visit the event website at http://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/wcg/index.asp or click on the following links to event related documents.
