Tampa, FL June 18, 2013 - Mayor Bob Buckhorn released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a provider who can offer free, outdoor wireless internet access in Tampa's urban parks.
"Wi-Fi will be a draw, particularly for the thousands of visitors who come down to the parks throughout our urban core, and a great amenity for the residents who live around them," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "I want people of all ages and backgrounds to come downtown and be able to work and play at the same time."
The RFP requests that the free, outdoor Wi-Fi be available along the Tampa Riverwalk, Water Works Park, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Cotanchobee Park, and Riverfront Park.
A vendor could support the free Wi-Fi availability by charging for Wi-Fi in other areas of the city or through online advertising, for example. The RFP requests an experienced provider who can own and operate the Wi-Fi network independently of the City.
Throughout his Administration, Mayor Buckhorn has worked to make City Hall more open and accessible through the installation of Wi-Fi in several city office buildings and use of social media to communicate with residents.
Responses to the RFP are due to the City of Tampa on July 30, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.
