Mayor Buckhorn Statement on Straz Board’s Support for Residences on the Riverwalk

Tampa, FL July 18, 2013 - Mayor Buckhorn Statement on Straz Board’s Support for Residences on the Riverwalk

Tampa, Fla. (July 18, 2013) – The Staz Board of Trustees has voted with an overwhelming majority in support of the Residences on the Riverwalk. Following the Straz Center’s announcement of the Board of Trustees’ support, Mayor Bob Buckhorn released the following statement:

“I appreciate the support for the project from the Straz Board and of so many other community groups for the Residences on the Riverwalk development. It is a clear indication that they share the developers’ and my vision for a vibrant, active waterfront and downtown.

“The Residences at the Riverwalk presented an opportunity for the Straz to have the challenging street grid fixed, while allowing us to activate the Tampa Riverwalk with new residential and retail possibilities. The project also creates an important connection between the Straz Center and north downtown with Curtis Hixon and the Tampa Museum of Art. The project and the tax revenue it will generate will allow us to continue to invest in our downtown, shaping an urban core we can all enjoy.

“I look forward to the project receiving approval from Tampa City Council and the start of construction next Spring.”

In addition to the Straz Center Board of Trustees, downtown’s neighborhood association the Uptown Council, Tampa Museum of Art, American Institute of Architects, Tampa Downtown Partnership, and the Friends of the Riverwalk have all expressed support for development that will complement the Riverwalk and River Arts District.
