|US Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Tampa Police Arrest Demetrius Parks in Orlando
Tampa, FL July 22, 2013 -
SUSPECT: Demetrius Parks, DOB: 12/3/89, B/M, Parks has moved between family and friends since his release from prison on 3/31/12
CHARGES: First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, Carjacking, Attempted Kidnapping, Auto Theft, Car Burglary, Felon in Possession of a Firearm
Through Investigative leads, the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force discovered Demetrius Parks was hiding in Atlanta, Georgia. Late last night, he boarded a Greyhound Bus to Orlando. At 10:00am on Saturday, 7/20/13 members of the US Marshal Fugitive Task and Tampa Police Officers surrounded the bus as it pulled into the terminal off John Young Parkway. When officers boarded the bus, Parks jumped out an emergency exit window. Officers quickly apprehended him without incident. The Orlando Police Department also assisted in his capture.
Community cooperation played a critical role in the investigation. The department received dozens of tips after Clear Channel and CBS Outdoor donated space on 30 digital billboards. It was tips from the community that helped police identify Parks and find the car he stole after killing the victim.
Parks has been transported to the Hillsborough County Jail.
Warrant Issued in Family Dollar Murder
$16,000 Reward Offered for Information that Leads tos Arrest and Conviction
Tips from the community helped Tampa Police Homicide Detectives identify the armed suspect in the surveillance photograph as Demetrius Parks. Since the shooting, officers have recovered the vehicle he stole to flee the scene and some of the suspect's clothing. Parks has an extensive criminal history. He served approximately 3 years in Florida State Prison for weapons charges. Since his release in March of 2012, the Tampa Police Department has arrested Parks 4 times for Burglary, Grand Theft, Opposing an Officer and Felon in Possession of a Firearm charges. In his 23 years, he has faced 37 felony charges and 25 misdemeanor charges. He is a career criminal who is a threat to our community.
There is now a $16,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of Parks. The US Marshals' Office has contributed $10,000, the Family Dollar Corporation has put up $5,000 and a $1,000 donation from Crime Stoppers brings the reward to $16,000. Anyone with information is asked to call (813) 309-0467.

LOCATION: Family Dollar Store, 4900 N 40th St. Tampa
VICTIM: Horsley Shorter Jr. DOB: 9/23/63, B/M, 3035 38th St. Tampa
SUSPECT: B/M 20's, thin build, dark complexion, black beanie, long sleeves thermal shirt, long shorts, dark blue boxers, low white socks
VEHICLE: Stolen victim's car; white Mitsubishi Mirage, 4door, Florida License Plate: AMZN75 with save the Ta-Ta's sticker on trunk and a sonic air freshener on rear view mirror.
DETAILS: The armed suspect entered the Family Dollar Store and demanded money from the employee behind worker. The suspect then shot the intervening employee who was a retired 26 year Army Veteran. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he later died from his injuries. The suspect then forced the other employee at gunpoint out to the victim's vehicle. The suspect opened the trunk and ordered the employee to get inside it. The employee pleaded with him and the suspect eventually closed the trunk and stole the car.
