Tampa Police Officer Arrested
 
Tampa, FL September 27, 2013 -


ARRESTED OFFICER: Jeanette Hevel, H/F, Hired Date: 2/11/86. She worked in the Criminal Investigations Bureau

CHARGES: Grand Theft

Today 9/27/13 at 1:00 pm, Detective Jeanette Hevel turned herself into Tampa Police detectives at her attorney’s office. She was terminated then transported to the Hillsborough County Jail on a Grand Theft charge.

On 11/15/11, a Tampa Police officer recovered four IRS money orders while arresting a suspect on a Possession of Marijuana charge. The officer followed standard operating procedures and placed the money orders into evidence. The value of the money orders totaled $1,900. The evidence log shows that on 12/7/11, Detective Jeanette Hevel entered the evidence room to “review evidence.” Instead, Hevel removed the money orders from the evidence room. On 12/20/11, Hevel cashed two of the money orders for a total of $1,000. On 12/21/11, the remaining two money orders for a total of $900 were deposited into her personal checking account.

On Monday 9/23/13, the Civil Recovery Division of the IRS contacted the Tampa Police Department in an attempt to locate the IRS money orders. At this time, the Tampa Police Department discovered the theft and began to very swiftly investigate the crime, which resulted in an arrest today.
