Tampa, FL December 4, 2013 - Mayor Bob Buckhorn will join community leaders, family and friends of Molly Ferrara, and the Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council (HCHAC) to dedicate a historic marker recognizing the legacy of one of Ybor City's greatest citizens. The event will take place on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. in front of Centro Ybor, located at 7th Avenue and 16th Street in Ybor City, Tampa.
Molly Ferrara was the first Alcaldesa (or first female Mayor) of Ybor City as well as the City of Tampa's first female tax collector. She was a public servant and business woman who worked to promote Ybor City locally, statewide, and internationally. She was also the founder of several organizations and served on numerous local boards. For her work, Ferrara was awarded the Tom Dooley Service to Humanity Award, Optimist Club Citizen of the Year, Woman of the Year Award, Sertoma Service to Mankind Award, and American Heart Award.
The community is invited and encouraged to attend this historic marker dedication ceremony.
The marker is sponsored by the Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council whose mission is to further the goals of historical preservation and education in Hillsborough County. The Council facilitates a uniform historical marker program in coordination with appropriate organizations or agencies. The Council has representatives from Hillsborough County including Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City.
