Mayor Buckhorn Opens Recreation Centers to Community to Enroll in Affordable Health Care Navigators to be available to public in 9 busiest Recreation Centers

Tampa, FL January 13, 2014 - This morning, Mayor Bob Buckhorn was joined by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius and Congresswoman Kathy Castor at the Loretta Ingraham Center to discuss the City of Tampa's ongoing efforts to assist HHS in enrolling residents for affordable health care coverage.

In Tampa, 96,000 of our residents are uninsured, as are more than 200,000 residents in Hillsborough County.

"I believe that having access to quality, affordable health care is a fundamental right and that too many of our friends and neighbors do not have that access today. The Affordable Care Act provides them with their best and first opportunity to get health care coverage," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "The community is already familiar with our recreation centers, and this will allow them to enroll in familiar place close to home."

Navigators will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on select dates each week beginning the week of Monday, January 20, 2014 through the enrollment deadline of March 31, 2014.

  • Springhill Center, 1000 E Eskimo - Mondays
  • Loretta Ingraham Center, 1615 N Hubert Ave - Tuesdays
  • Jackson Heights Center, 3310 E Lake Ave – Tuesdays
  • Hunt Center at Al Lopez Park, 4810 N. Himes Ave – Wednesdays
  • Gwen Miller Center, 6410 N 32nd St - Wednesdays
  • Forest Hills Center, 724 W 109th Ave - Thursdays
  • Cyrus Greene Center, 2101 E Dr. MLK Jr Blvd - Thursdays
  • Port Tampa Center, 4702 W McCoy St – Thursdays
  • Copeland Park Center, 11001 N 15th St - Fridays

These 9 centers were chosen because they are the busiest centers in the City of Tampa. Please note that to visit with a navigator at each center, residents do not need to have a Rec Card. For more information, call (813) 422-4917.

Mayor Buckhorn also taped a PSA to let residents know that navigators are available to them at select recreation centers. To view the PSA, please visit youtube.com.

Tampa Fire Rescue will also have printed materials on hand. Residents will be able to visit any station in the City to pick up printed materials about affordable health care and how to get covered. Our first responders will also be able to distribute them while out in the community.

Congregants and the community as a whole often turn to faith-based leaders for resources, counsel, and guidance, which is why Mayor Buckhorn will also ask them to partner with the City in spreading the word about getting covered.
