WHEN: 12/17/2013 - 12/19/2013
WHERE: 17519 Bruce B. Downs Boulevard (Hess) & 17402 Dona Michelle Boulevard (Shell)
DETAILS: Between December 17 and December 19 someone compromised one control panel at the Hess gas station and two control panels at the Shell station. The suspect attached an in-line credit card skimming device to collect the credit card data.
Paying at the pump is no doubt convenient, but when you pay at the gas pump, you may unknowingly be putting your information right in a crook’s hands.
Skimming relies on data-reading electronics to copy the magnetic stripe information from consumer’s credit card or debit card. It can capture both the credit card number and PIN.
Tips for keeping your card safe from skimmers
1. Inspect the card reader and the area near the PIN pad
2. Look at other nearby gas pumps or ATMs card readers to see if they match the one you are using
3. Trust your instincts. If in doubt, use another machine somewhere else
4. Use a credit card over using a debit card
5. If you use a debit card, avoid entering your PIN
6. Pay inside the gas station
7. Be sure to monitor your accounts regularly for any fraudulent activity
