Mayor Buckhorn Hosts Inaugural Mayor's Mac & Cheese Throwdown - Area eateries to compete for best local mac & cheese dish
Tampa, FL April 2, 2014 -  Mayor Bob Buckhorn in conjunction with the Friends of the Riverwalk will host the inaugural Mayor's Mac & Cheese Throwdown on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

"Everyone loves mac & cheese -- its comfort food at its best. This event will highlight some of the best local eateries in Tampa and give families another reason to come downtown to explore our urban core," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

More than 25 local eateries will compete in three categories to determine the best local mac & cheese dish. Those three categories are as follows: "classic mac" for traditionalists served with non-alcoholic drinks; "Brews & Mac Presented by Fat Tire and Samuel Adams" for recipes with a twist paired with craft beer; and, "Wine & Cheese Presented by Bonterra Wines" for high end cheeses and classic wines.

Holy Hog BBQ, Anise Gastro Global Bar, Sunny Side Up, Bamboozle, Cigar City Brew Pub, Splitsville/Tina Tapas, Doormet, Yacht Starship, Taps, and Malio's are just a few of the local restaurants signed up to compete. For restaurants wanting to participate, please contact Shaun Drinkard, Executive Director of the Friends of the Riverwalk at (813) 221-1539.

Local chef Greg Baker of The Refinery will lead the delegation of judges, and diners will be able to pick their favorite as part of the "People’s Choice Award."

All mac & cheese samples will be sold on behalf of the Friends of the Riverwalk, a local nonprofit that works to improve and enhance the Tampa Riverwalk. The event and entertainment are free and open to the public.

The event will also feature live entertainment, including Mighty Mongo, Matt Hires, Cleamons Road, and the Sh-Booms, craft beer and wine, as well as games and activities for all ages.
