Mayor Buckhorn, TD Bank Kick Off Green Streets Grant Program with First Tree Planting Green Streets Grant funds planting, sustainability training for residents

Tampa, FL June 23, 2014 -

WHAT:

On Thursday, June 26, 2014, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and TD Bank Senior Retail Office Chris Yancey along with representatives from VM Ybor and Tampa Heights neighborhoods and local volunteers from TD Bank will kick off the TD Green Streets grant program. In March 2014, the City of Tampa, one of only ten cities nationwide, received a $20,000 TD Green Streets Grant which will go towards new tree plantings in VM Ybor and Tampa Heights as well as sustainability training for residents. At the event, Mayor Buckhorn will formally receive the $20,000 check from TD Bank and join residents in planting the first crepe myrtle as part of the initiative.

A larger community planting will occur in the fall. Following that planting, arborists with the City of Tampa will work with the University of Florida to implement a stewardship program, educating residents about how to care for our urban forest. If successful, the stewardship training will be expanded citywide. Funding for the TD Green Streets grants comes from TD Bank and is administered by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Throughout the year, the City of Tampa plants trees in the right of way at no cost to the neighborhood association or to the resident. Click here to request a tree be planted in your neighborhood.
