Tampa, FL October 26, 2005 -
DATE/TIME: 10/24/05, 3:44 a.m.
SUSPECT: B/M, Shaka C. Aquil, 12/01/73, At large
LOCATION: 50th Street & E. Busch Boulevard
DETAILS: Shaka C. Aquil is wanted on two counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer in connection with the shooting that occurred on the early morning hours of Monday 10/24/05.
A Temple Terrace Police Officer stopped a 1998 Lincoln Continental driven by Derrick J. McCalla at N. 50th Street and E. Busch Boulevard. Shaka Aquil was the front seat passenger in the car. During the traffic stop, the officer determined that Aquil was currently wanted on an outstanding warrant.
As the officer and a second Temple Terrace Officer who had arrived on scene, approached the Lincoln; Aquil leaned out the passenger window and fired at least one shot from a semi-automatic handgun at the officers. Both officers in fear for their lives, returned fire at the suspect who fled the scene on foot. The officers were not injured and it is unknown at this time if Aquil was wounded.
McCalla was taken into custody at the scene. Aquil has not been located and is considered armed and dangerous. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force (comprised of Bay area Law Enforcement Agencies) has been conducting an intense search for the armed suspect. Anyone with information as to the suspect’s location is urged to contact the Tampa Police Department at 231-6130 or call CrimeStoppers at (800) 873-8477.
