| Museum To Host Public Forums With Architect Stanley Saitowitz |
| |
Tampa, FL January 22, 2007 - The Tampa Museum of Art will host a public forum with Architect Stanley Saitowitz on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. Mayor Pam Iorio will provide opening remarks. The forum will provide an opportunity for citizens to engage in a public discussion with the architect, share ideas about what should be considered when designing a new art museum, and learn about Saitowitz and his creative process.
According to Chairman of the Board Cornelia Corbett, “I am personally very excited about this next step toward building the new Tampa Museum of Art. We encourage the community to join us for a unique opportunity to share ideas with the architect as he begins to design our new museum.” The forum is free and open to the public. The Tampa Museum of Art is located at 600 North Ashley Drive. Parking is available for a fee in the Curtis Hixon Parking Garage located under the museum.
A second forum is scheduled with Saitowitz on Thursday, February 1, 2007 from 3 to 5 p.m. with the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA forum is geared toward the architectural community. AIA members will have the opportunity to discuss their profession, share ideas about Tampa’s new museum and learn more about Saitowitz and his experience. “We are pleased to host these public events for everyone to participate in. The educational and community impact of the new museum will be far-reaching for generations to come,” says Ken Rollins, interim executive director of the Tampa Museum of Art.
Saitowitz, of San Francisco, California, was recently selected by the museum’s board of trustees to design the new Tampa Museum of Art. The museum, which will be located downtown in Curtis Hixon Park, is slated to open in late 2008 or early 2009. Phase one of the 120,000 square foot master plan will consist of approximately 60,000 square feet.
Funding for the new facility will come from both the public and private sectors of the community. The City of Tampa has allocated $18.5 million of Community Investment Tax Funds for the new museum facility and demolition of the existing building. Additional monies are being generated by the museum through a capital fundraising initiative. Site work on the new museum is expected to begin in the fall of 2007.
The Tampa Museum of Art celebrates its 28th season, having opened its doors in 1979. The museum is a proud culmination of almost three decades of cooperation among art organizations, private citizens, and government agencies in Tampa and Hillsborough County.
The Tampa Museum of Art is dedicated to advancing the visual arts through exhibitions and education programs for the broadest possible audience. The Tampa Museum of Art’s primary purpose is to collect, preserve, display and interpret works of art, reflecting art forms of regional, national and international importance.
