Tampa, FL November 29, 2007 - In an effort to help the Ybor merchants during this holiday season, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio has suspended parking meter fees between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Ybor City for the month of December. The new “free” parking will take effect December 1, 2007 and continue through December 31, 2007.
This latest initiative is designed to encourage residents to frequent the historic district for lunch and shopping with the intent of bolstering holiday business in the district. This is the third initiative under the Iorio administration to help the merchants in Ybor City. In September 2005, the administration opened 7th Avenue to traffic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to help reduce crime and encourage business. Following the opening of 7th Avenue, Iorio expanded the on-street 7th Avenue parking program for Thursday, Friday and Saturday business.
City government expects to lose approximately $21,000 in revenue from the on-street meters and metered parking lots combined. Both the Fernando Noriega/Palm Avenue Parking Garage and the Centro Ybor Garage on 5th Avenue will not be affected by the suspended rates as all fees will remain the same.
