Tampa, FL October 21, 2009 - Business and community leaders will join Mayor Pam Iorio for a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the new South Plaza segment of the Tampa Riverwalk. The event will take place Monday, October 26, 2009 at 10 a.m. at South Plaza on the Riverwalk, which is located on the southwest corner of Channelside and Beneficial drives. Immediately following the ceremony, participants are invited to walk along the Tampa Riverwalk to Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park and enjoy refreshments courtesy of the Columbia Café.
The Tampa Riverwalk’s South Plaza is the beginning of the waterfront pedestrian corridor that spans from the Channel District to the Brorein Street Bridge. The Plaza serves as the gateway to Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, the Tampa Bay History Center, and the Columbia Café. Featured at South Plaza is a new public art installation, Riverwall. An iconic entrance to the Riverwalk, the 40-foot mural was created by artist Bruce Marsh. Composed of 550 tiles, it is a quilt of images that celebrates and documents the Hillsborough River.
South Plaza, a $2.1 million project, includes land donated to the City of Tampa by Harbor Island Community Services Association and the Tampa Bay Lightning. It incorporates contemporary shade structures and informational signage complimentary to the Tampa Riverwalk’s overall design.
