“Mayor’s Book Talk” Welcomes Tampa Author Susan C. Turner

Tampa, FL October 29, 2009 - Mayor Pam Iorio’s guest on the November episode of “Mayor’s Book Talk” is Susan C. Turner, author and illustrator of picture books and various works of fiction and nonfiction. Her books engage children’s timeless interests in outdoor adventure and the challenges of growing up. The two will discuss Turner’s latest book, Rufus Steele 1938.

The mayor’s book discussion group, fifth grade students from Rampello Downtown Partnership School, also talks about Rufus Steele 1938. The book, set in a small 1938 farming community, is about a fourteen-year old boy, his brothers, and their fight for their lives. Mysterious and courageous, Dr. Rufus Steele proves to be a powerful ally, and strong bonds develop among them. Students can read along by logging onto www.tampagov.net/booktalk for discussion questions and upcoming book selections.

Mayor Iorio also talks with Carla Jimenez from Inkwood Books, a popular South Tampa bookstore, about some of today’s most engaging and current reading selections.

“Mayor’s Book Talk” can be viewed on City of Tampa Television (CTTV), Channel 15 on Verizon FiOS and Channel 615 on Bright House Networks. Replay times for “Mayor’s Book Talk” are Sundays at 3:30 p.m., Mondays at 8 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m.
