Where: Sulphur Springs Elementary School, 8412 N. 13th Street
Details:
Santa’s sleigh will land at Sulphur Springs Elementary filled with toys and snacks on Friday, December 18, 2009. Several local organizations pooled their resources together to provide presents to over 600 needy students and their teachers from throughout the community.
Volunteers Cyndy and Louis Miller are the driving force behind the event, which started eight years ago at the Tampa Police Department’s Resources in Community Hope (RICH) House. They partnered with police to bring holiday cheer to children who frequent the RICH House program. The holiday party outgrew the house and last year it moved to the neighborhood elementary school to benefit all the students. This year, the festivities are made possible through Cyndy and Louis Miller and Friends in partnership with the Tampa Police Department District Two, other City of Tampa employees, the Sulphur Springs Action League, Bayshore Baptist Church, Davis Islands’ Residents, Rough Riders, Christ the King Scout Troops, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Tampa Theatre, Plant Museum, Domino’s Pizza, Salvation Army and JP Morgan.
The “R.I.C.H. House,” commonly known as the Weed and Seed House, gives neighborhood children a positive alternative to hanging out in the streets where they are often unsupervised and can get into trouble. Tampa Police Officer Debbie Boles and Site Coordinator Earl Silas run the safe haven and act as role models for the children in the community.
