40th Street Corridor Enhancement Project Completed

Tampa, FL March 25, 2011 - Mayor Pam Iorio will be joined by business and community leaders to celebrate the completion of the 40th Street Corridor Enhancement Project. The event will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 28, 2011 at the corner of 40th Street and East Miller Avenue.

The 40th Street Corridor Enhancement Project spans from Hillsborough Avenue to Fowler Avenue, a distance of approximately 4.2 miles. The planning study for this corridor was completed in 1997 and construction was completed in five separate phases. The project converted the existing two-lane roadway into a four-lane divided roadway with sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bus shelters, landscaped median, and street lighting. Additionally, stormwater improvements and upgraded water and wastewater facilities were part of the project. This enhancement will increase vehicle capacity and will provide a safer environment for motorists as well as pedestrians and bicyclists. The new four-lane bridge structure over the Hillsborough River features enhanced aesthetics.

The total cost for this City of Tampa project was approximately $103 million and had support and funding participation from the Federal Highway Administration, State of Florida, and Hillsborough County. The project was designed by PBS&J, Inc. and construction services were provided by Kimmins Contracting, Purcell Construction, and Cone and Graham, Inc.
