Riverwalk Continues to Progress

Tampa, FL May 23, 2012 - Mayor Bob Buckhorn will cut the ribbon and celebrate the completion of the next two sections of the Tampa Riverwalk, the Brorein Street Underpass and the Brownstone Segment. The event will take place on Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at the Brownstone property (just north of Brorein Street) located at 111 South Ashley Drive. The public is invited to attend.

"I want the Hillsborough River to be at the center of our downtown and that means we need to continue to develop our waterfront and build on the Riverwalk," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Today is another step in making that happen."

There is currently 1.5 miles of completed Riverwalk along the Tampa waterfront. This segment extends the southern part of the existing walkway an additional 550 feet - bringing the length of contiguous walkway just shy of a mile.

This segment of the Riverwalk features a path with literary elements, Quotes on the Water, which are engraved into the walkway. The 14 quotes are intended to encourage discussion and reflection. There are other interactive elements along the Tampa Riverwalk including the Verizon Audio Tour as well as interpretive displays covering a variety of historical and environmental topics.

The lead design consultant for this project is AECOM, aided by the local offices of Moffatt & Nichol and HDR. Johnson Brothers, LLC constructed the segment. The total project cost for design and construction is $3.2 million of which $2.1 million comes from federal grants and private donations through Friends of the Riverwalk.

The next segment to the north, the CapTrust segment, is already under construction and is scheduled to be completed in August. It will link the Brownstone segment to MacDill Park.
