Tampa’s Mayor’s Youth Corps Wins Youth Council Video Competition

Tampa, FL September 18, 2012 - The teenage crew of City of Tampa Television’s (CTTV) award-winning show From the Corps, has again drawn recognition for the youth council they represent – the Mayor’s Youth Corps (MYC). This time the recognition comes in the form of a first place trophy presented to them by the Florida League of Cities for winning their inaugural Youth Council Video Competition.

Founded in 1922, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. The goal of their contest was to provide a way for Florida’s youth councils to present their work and illustrate the positive impact these councils have on their respective city governments and the residents of their communities.

In addition to the trophy, these young and highly involved students received a cash prize substantial enough so that members of the group could attend the Hollywood, Florida conference and award ceremony that was held in August. The MYC will additionally be highlighted in an upcoming edition of the statewide Quality Cities magazine.

“It was an amazing conference,” said Pedro Lima, a former member of the MYC, and part of the team responsible for the video presentation. “We got a chance to work with youth from all across the state.”

Now a member of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council, Lima is able to reflect on his time with the Youth Corps as he mentors the next group of motivated students.

“The Mayor’s Youth Corps has taught me a lot that I use in my day-to-day life. It has made me want to be a leader and willing to become a leader. Before the Mayor’s Youth Corps, it was easy for me to sit back and be shy. I also learned a lot about the City and it has taught me about giving back to my hometown.”

Members of the youth corps participate in a variety of important community service projects; are active in leadership development activities; and many of them are involved in the production of From the Corps on CTTV. From the Corps, now in its ninth season, provides these students with an outlet to express their points of view. Since 2004, members of the MYC have logged over 5,000 hours of civic involvement and community service projects.

In its history, From the Corps has itself received much recognition, including four first-place Hometown Video Festival awards from the Alliance for Community Media (ACM). The ACM is a nonprofit organization with national membership that represents over 1,000 public, education and government access stations, community media centers and their contributors.
