The Tampa Fire Department's goal is to save lives and protect the property of the citizens of Tampa. Authorized personnel strength will increase to 581 with the addition of six paramedics at the Tampa International Airport. Last year the Airport generated 711 calls requiring medical assistance. These six additional paramedics (two per shift) will be able to provide quicker response to calls throughout the Airport property. The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority reimburses the City for the full cost of fire and rescue services provided.

The Fire Department will be able to replace some older equipment with money raised by the Community Investment Tax and bond refinancing. This year the department purchased two rescue vehicles, five engines, one aerial, two tank trucks, one mini-van, one maintenance shop truck, four compact sedans, two pickup trucks and various improvements to fire stations and facilities. In FY99 the Fire Department will purchase two engines and three rescue vehicles.

Initial design/construction is planned for three fire stations in FY99. A new one, #23, will be built in Hunter's Green. Two stations are being replaced: #12 at MacDill and Hillsborough, and #13 being relocated to Annie and 29th Street.
