FY2006 Tampa Reports to the People

Public Safety

When it comes to building a budget each year, the first dollars go to public safety - police and fire. That's because your safety is important to us. We are committed to making Tampa safer.

Police Department

The Tampa Police Department, with its budget of $125.8 million, has significantly reduced Tampa’s crime rate. This past year, our city experienced a 12.2 percent drop in our crime rate. In fact, there were fewer crimes committed in Tampa in 2004 than in 1984.

The police have instituted effective community policing - working hand-in-hand with residents and businesses in neighborhoods to make Tampa a better and safer place to live.

This year we have added seven new civilian positions to support the increased productivity. From evidence technicians and finger-print specialists to investigative assistants, the department will be able to better support the work of our officers.

Tampa police officers are hard at work this year to continue to lower the crime rate. This budget year, they are developing initiatives in each district that will build on the success with community policing. By better understanding a neighborhood, officers are able to tailor operations to address the concerns of communities.

Statistics not available for 1988.

Fire Department

Annually, 80% of Tampa Fire Rescue calls are medical related.

Tampa Fire Rescue is dedicated to providing citizens with the most reliable emergency services possible.

There are more than 600 men and women of Tampa Fire Rescue serving you everyday. In this year's budget we are adding:

  • Seven additional firefighters as part of our ongoing commitment of adding personnel to better serve the public.
  • A new rescue car and six additional personnel for Station 21 in New Tampa. New Tampa is growing at a rapid rate and with this growth comes the need for additional emergency services. These new paramedics, along with the rescue car and associated equipment, will help ensure a quick response time.
  • An additional rescue car will be purchased this fiscal year for Station 9 with staffing for the car anticipated in the following fiscal year.
