Parks and Recreation

Budget Image

A commitment to the basics means a focus on providing quality parks and recreation opportunities throughout our city. Our Parks and Recreation department is the second largest department with 700 employees and a budget of $43.4 million. The many dedicated parks and recreation employees work to deliver quality services while maintaining the safety and appearance of our facilities.

The recommended budget calls for five new full-time parks and recreation employees. In addition, we will fund an additional 17 part-time summer employees to fully staff our summer programs in recreation centers throughout our city. This year's budget also calls for renovations and improvements to pools, playgrounds, multi-purpose courts, trails and centers.

Using the Community Investment Tax revenue we will embark on major projects. The Bayshore Balustrade will be refurbished; Springhill Park and Community Center in Sulphur Springs will be designed; and the construction of the New Tampa Community Center will begin. Working in partnership with involved citizens, Freedom Playground at MacFarlane Park, a long overdue playground designed specifically for children with disabilities, will be constructed. The Pier and Boat Ramp at Ballast Point will also undergo extensive reconstruction. These investments, along with others, will enhance an already strong and diverse parks and recreation program.
