HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL TO HOLD AWARDS CELEBRATION.
The Tampa/Hillsborough County Human Rights Council will hold their 27th Annual Human Rights Awards Celebration Breakfast, Friday, December 8, 7:30am at the Holiday Inn City Center, 111 W. Fortune Street, (Downtown Tampa). The Council is a project to end hatred, violence and discrimination. The theme of this year's event is "Celebrating Ten Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The guest speaker will be Jack Humburg, Accessibility Consultant/Abilities of Florida. SILENT ART AUCTION SETS NEW RECORD.
Raquel Fruchter, of the Hillsborough County Arts Council and Chairperson of the Annual Awards Luncheon Silent Art Auction Committee reports that this year's auction set a record in funds raised to buy art supplies for the exceptional education arts program. Raquel has been chairing the auction for several years and says "the quality of art increases each year." She is also responsible for choosing the art work given to the winners of the Mayor's Awards each year.

The Hillsborough Association for Retarded Citizens (HARC) recently issued their Strategic Plan for 2000 - 2003 setting six goals for the organization to follow. The mission of the Association is to provide resources, opportunities and advocacy to empower individuals with development disabilities to achieve maximum community independence. 2001 YOUTH FORUM SEEKING APPLICATIONS.
The Able Trust is currently seeking applications for the Florida Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) to be held in Tallahassee July 12 - 15, 2001. Forty high school juniors and seniors who have disabilities will be selected as delegates for the forum. There is no application fee and all expenses will be paid by the Trust. Applications can be obtained by calling toll-free (888) 838-2253. Deadline for applying is December 8, 2000.
TARGET STORES TO PROVIDED SHOPPING ASSISTANCE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES.
On December 5th from 8 to 10 a.m. Target stores throughout the country will provide a personal assistant to help persons with disabilities and senior citizens with their holiday shopping. A Target Team Member will be available to help each individual shopper. In addition, shoppers using this service will receive an additional 10% discount on all purchases and there will also be in-store entertainment and refreshments.
PAST LUNCHEON SPEAKER FORMS GROUP TO FIGHT FOR UNEMPLOYED DISABLED.
Richard Salem, a Tampa lawyer who is blind, and a past annual Alliance luncheon keynote speaker, is fighting to reduce unemployment among persons with disabilities. Salem, who is also a member of the Board of the National Organization on Disability, has joined forces with several Members of Congress (Senator Max Cleland of Georgia and Rep. Bill Young of Florida) to form "Enable America." The organization is a Political Action Committee (PAC) whose goals are to fund and support national candidates who will commit to pass legislation that will reduce unemployment among people with disabilities. Salem said, "This group will focus on diminishing the high unemployment rate among persons with disabilities by seeking to change public policy."
