MAYOR GRECO PRESENTS ALLIANCE ANNUAL AWARDS.

Mayor Greco presented the 2000 Annual Awards at the Alliance's Annual Luncheon Tuesday, October 24. The Employer Award went to Hyatt Hotels of Tampa, The Hyatt Regency Westshore and The Hyatt Regency Downtown Tampa. The hotels have trained over eighty persons with disabilities and have hired ten to work at the hotels. The other trainees have gone on to find employment at other hotels or restaurants. In presenting the award Mayor Greco said, "We salute this company for their training of many people with disabilities and for showing the rest of the community that there is a reliable work force available waiting to be trained." The Outstanding Community Service Award went to Anita Frankcene Favors-Daniels, who though disabled herself has taken the plight of persons with disabilities to the state and national level attending seminars and hearings on accessibility and benefits for the disabled in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. The Media Award went to AccessLife.Com. This internet web site dealing with disability issues originates in Tampa and though it is a national company it has supported many groups and events in the Tampa area. It has been the originator of interactive chat and forums on disabilities concerning local groups. In addition to the dealing with disability issues forty percent of the employees of this web site are disabled. The keynote speaker at the luncheon was Greg Smith, host and creator of the nationally syndicated "ON-A-ROLL RADIO" talk show and home page columnist for AccessLife.com. Smith who is a wheelchair rider with muscular dystrophy spoke about how his persistency paid off in getting his career started as a broadcaster. He also told of his teenage experiences being in a wheelchair in a world that was pre- ADA.
