Easter Seals Florida held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its Murray Child Development Center. The new 13,500 square-foot facility was designed to help address the growing needs in the Tampa Bay community. Easter Seals provides exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.

The 2009 Southern Encampment Conference was hosted by the Florida Brigade and the George E. Edgecomb Company X Auxiliary of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (I.B.P.O.E.) of the World. The I.B.P.O.E. was granted copyright as an organization in 1898, and is the largest predominately black fraternal organization in the world with membership of over 450,000.

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce  membership luncheon, the Reality of Rail, focused on mass transit for east county. The Chamber, incorporated in 1959, has doubled its membership over the past ten years to almost 1,800 members. The Chamber advocates and works to promote a favorable business climate, quality of life and orderly growth and development of the greater Brandon community.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Segment A of the 40th Street Project. Spanning from Hillsborough Avenue to Hanna Avenue on 40th Street, this is the fifth and final segment of the 40th Street road-widening project. This portion of the project includes roadway, stormwater, water and wastewater improvements; street lighting, sidewalks, landscaping, and irrigation. Expected to be completed in spring 2011, the total project cost for Segment A is $5 million.

Mayor Iorio was a guest lecturer for a Business Ethics and Social Responsibility class at the University of Tampa. The class was led by Roy McCraw, an Executive in Residence for the John H. Sykes College of Business. For the past four years, the Sykes College of Business has been named an outstanding business school by The Princeton Review and it is one of the few business schools in the Southeast accredited at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Draper Laboratory opened its new Bioengineering Center at the University of South Florida (USF). The Center will work in conjunction with USF faculty in the application of new technologies to solve medical and biological problems. The 10,000 square-foot facility is expected to double in size and bring 100 jobs to Tampa over the next several years.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the new South Plaza segment of the Tampa Riverwalk

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the new South Plaza segment of the Tampa Riverwalk . Featured at South Plaza is a 40-foot mural, Riverwall, a quilt of images that celebrates and documents the Hillsborough River. The South Plaza project includes land donated to the City of Tampa by Harbor Island Community Services Association and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa now has close to a mile of beautiful Riverwalk in place from the plaza to Brorein Street and its next segment, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, is slated to open in January.

The VIP Club visited City Hall to learn about civic responsibility and public service as part of disability mentoring day. Mayor Iorio gave an overview and then answered questions from the students. The group made the mayor an honorary member of the club and presented her with a shirt. The VIP club consists of visually impaired students from both middle and high schools in Hillsborough County. They meet monthly for activities, community experiences, career exploration, and social skills.

Fair Oaks Community Lake was renamed in honor of Herbert D. Carrington, Sr. who passed away in 2006 at the age of 107. A resident and community leader in East Tampa, Mr. Carrington began his relationship with the City's parks and recreation department in early 1950 at Cyrus Greene. He worked at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club for nearly 60 years. He was awarded Father of the Year in 2006 by the 100 Black Men of Tampa.

The City of Tampa Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committee held their 21st Annual Celebration at Tampa Theatre. The cultural event, held in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, featured Spanish Flamenco performances by students from the Patel Conservatory and other musical entertainment. Tedd Webb was the MC and the keynote speaker was Patsy Feliciano, University of South Florida Interim Director of Diversity and Equal Opportunity.

The 2010 class of the Tampa Connection spent their day learning about the city at their Tampa 101 Program. As part of the program, Mayor Iorio spoke to the class and answered questions on a variety of topics concerning Tampa. The Tampa Connection is a leadership program that prepares class members to become active volunteers and leaders in the community. Each year, as part of the program, non-profit organization projects are selected for the class members to plan and implement for each agency.

The Children’s Cancer Center  held their annual Holiday Card Unveiling luncheon at Carrabba’s Italian Grill. The Children’s Cancer Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing children who have cancer or chronic blood disorders and their families with the educational, emotional and financial assistance necessary to cope with their life-threatening illnesses. The Holiday Card project, which showcases cards and ornaments designed by young cancer patients, is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Children’s Cancer Center.

The Ybor City Development Corporation (YCDC) held its installation ceremony for the new board members at Teatro on 7th in Centro Ybor. October 19, 2009

The Ybor City Development Corporation (YCDC) held its installation ceremony for the new board members at Teatro on 7th in Centro Ybor. The YCDC, a division of Economic & Urban Development Department , assists with the development, redevelopment, economic revitalization and general improvement of the Ybor City's Historic District, its two community redevelopment areas and the surrounding community.

Mayor Iorio proclaimed "Billy Book Week" to mark the 30th year of the BILLY bookcase, a versatile and popular IKEA furniture item. The mayor started the week by reading to students from DeSoto Elementary at IKEA. A book drive at IKEA Tampa is also part of the celebration. The books collected will be donated to DeSoto Elementary School and IKEA is providing the school with five new Billy bookcases.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk  kicked off at the St. Pete Times Forum and made its way along Bayshore Boulevard. October 17, 2009

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk kicked off at the St. Pete Times Forum and made its way along Bayshore Boulevard. The day was officially proclaimed “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Day”  in the City of Tampa. The American Cancer Society estimates 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer for 2009. However, with early detection and better treatment breast cancer death rates have been declining and there are now more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors.

The 2009 Crescent Club Dinner was held at the H. B. Plant Museum in appreciation of the generous support from museum donors. An authentic 1921 Tampa Bay Hotel dinner was served in the former hotel’s Grand Salon. The museum and the restored rooms of the Tampa Bay Hotel transport visitors back to a time of indulgent ten-course meals, waltzing on the veranda and alligator hunting by moonlight.

The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) City Center Chapter held its 2009 Boss of the Year luncheon at The Tampa Club. The IAAP is the world’s largest association of administrative support staff, with over 600 chapters and 40,000 members and affiliates worldwide.

Mayor Pam Iorio participated in a promotional ceremony for Tampa Fire Rescue's 16 newest members. The ceremony was held at the Tampa Firefighters Museum with friends and families in attendance. The new firefighters finished a four-week orientation program before being assigned to their first fire stations.

Local and state officials were among those who attended a news conference at Cypress Point Park  in support of the Florida Forever Coalition, the nation's largest environmental land acquisition program. Mayor Iorio welcomed former Governor Bob Martinez who is serving as an honorary co-chair for the Florida Forever Coalition. As governor, Martinez established the Preservation 2000 Program, which preceded Florida Forever.

The 2009 Hispanic Community Forum, held at La Senda Antigua Church of God, included panelists from Tampa Fire Rescue, Tampa Police, the Tampa Office of Human Rights, Consumer Protection, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Florida Immigration Coalition. This public forum is organized by the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council for members of the Hispanic community, Latin organizations and government agencies. The Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Councilserves as a liaison between the City government and the local Hispanic community.

A Neighborhood Presidents' Coffee was held with the leaders from Ballast Point , Courier City/Oscawana, Old West Tampa, Palma Ceia West , Sunset ParkVM Ybor, Woodland Terrace, and THAN . Topics of discussion included issues and concerns facing Tampa's neighborhoods as well as suggestions for improvements.

Hundreds attended the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) Partner America Small Business Appreciation Dinner held at Mise en Place. During the program, attendees celebrated the success of small business in Tampa and discussed the city's current business climate. Partner America, created by USMC and George Cloutier, Founder/CEO of American Management Services in 2000, is the nation's first public-private small business resource initiative. George is also the author of "Profits Aren't Everything, They're The Only Thing."

Comedian Mark Malkoff was presented a key to the City of Tampa as part of his “Keys to the City” video project, which also included volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries October 12, 2009

Comedian Mark Malkoff was presented a key to the City of Tampa as part of his “Keys to the City” video project, which also included volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries. The project, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, is a 28-day crusade to convince city mayors to give him keys to their cities. By November 1, Malkoff hopes to have added 100 city keys to his key ring. Malkoff, who formerly worked for Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NPR and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In a former race against the clock, Malkoff visited and consumed purchases at every Manhattan Starbucks location in under 24 hours.

Over 1,500 runners participated in the 15th Annual Tampa Police Memorial Run-Walk. Proceeds from the event are used to maintain the Police Memorial and host a yearly event that pays tribute to officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The run also funds educational scholarships and donations to law enforcement charities.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place downtown to celebrate the start of an extension to the TECO Line Streetcar System. The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) project will extend the streetcar line north on Franklin Street to Whiting Street adjacent to the Fort Brooke parking garage. The extension will connect the more than 35,000 people who work in the downtown area to the Channel District and Historic Ybor City. The anticipated date of operation for the extension is December 2010.

During the event, students were introduced to Dr. Nils J. Diaz, this year’s MOSI National Hispanic Scientist of the Year. Meet the Scientist Day, a part of the MOSI’s National Hispanic Scientist of the Year program, is a day of mentoring and activities for students

A reception was held at the Columbia Centennial Museum to honor Dr. Nils J. Diaz, MOSI’s National Hispanic Scientist of the Year for 2009. Diaz is the former Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and currently serves as a Commissioner of the Florida Energy and Climate Commission  ). He is recognized internationally for his contributions to nuclear sciences, reactor systems and fuels, the regulations of nuclear facilities and radioactive materials, and to nuclear policy analysis and development. The MOSI National Hispanic Scientist of the Year program recognizes outstanding Hispanic scientists who promote a greater public understanding of science and to cultivate an interest in science among Hispanic youth.

In celebration of its centennial, Mutual of Omaha  partnered with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. Over 200 volunteers from Mutual of Omaha, Friends of Tampa Recreation, Inc. and the community came out to build a playground for the children of the Wellswood neighborhood. Together Mutual of Omaha and KaBOOM! built seven playgrounds in Omaha, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, Tampa and St. Louis.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research to celebrate the opening of its new Ocular Research Center. It is the first research center in the world to be directly combined with an eye bank, providing a repository of healthy and diseased tissue for research. As the largest research center of its kind, it will allow for real-time studies of tissue, clinical data and familial information for factors leading to vision impairment. Over the past 30 years, Lions Eye Institute has provided more than 30,000 corneas for transplant and 50,000 eyes for research worldwide and has given sight to over 30,000 people.

The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) Brandon Sunburst Chapter held its Pioneering Woman of the Year Dinner and Awards Ceremony. Topics for the evening included the history of working women in the Tampa Bay area, principles of leadership and striving for excellence. The organization provides business training and networking opportunities for women of diverse occupations and backgrounds. The ABWA has dedicated more than half a century to women's education and has provided workplace skills and career development training for more than 545,000 members.

This annual event helps strengthen ties between the City of Tampa and the countries represented by the Consular Corps. Additionally, the lunch provides members the opportunity to be briefed on the city’s present and future plans and discuss Tampa’s role in the international community.

Jane Castor took the oath of office to become the new police chief for the City of Tampa at a swearing in ceremony in the mayor’s conference room. The oath was administered by Judge Barbara Fleischer, with Castor's mother, Carolyn, holding the bible. Castor is the first female police chief serving the Tampa Police Department (TPD). During her 25 years with TPD, she has worked in narcotics, street anti-crime, sex crimes and child abuse units, as well as the Criminal Intelligence Bureau.
