Mayor's Youth Corps

Empowered, caring youth dedicated to making community service a life-long commitment.logo

It is the mission of the Mayor’s Youth Corps:

  • To provide a direct communication link between the Mayor and the youth of the City of Tampa
  • To provide the experience of working with city government and instill a sense of civic responsibility
  • To provide leadership opportunities
  • To provide opportunities for hands-on, effective service to the citizens and the city
  • To promote and recognize the accomplishments and contributions of youth to the City of Tampa

The Mayor’s Youth Corps will be comprised of two students from each participating high school, both public and private, located within the city limits of Tampa as well as six at large members.  Every effort will be made to ensure the Mayor’s Youth Corps represents the ethnic, gender and age diversity of the high school population.  The initial Youth Corps will include 40 students.  As the program evolves and develops with youth input, the program’s membership may grow.

  • Each school will be invited to nominate students.  Materials for student nominations will be sent to each participating school.
  • Students may also self-nominate.
  • A selection committee will review applications, conduct interviews and make recommendations for appointment to Youth Corps.
  • Background checks will be done on each student and parents/guardians will be asked to sign a medical authorization.  Students will be asked to sign a code of conduct and a photo authorization release.

  • Students in 9th, 10th or 11th grade are eligible
  • Students must possess a desire to make Tampa a more livable city via personal involvement
  • Students must be willing to commit to a year of service to Tampa and Youth Corps
  • Students must be willing to do hands-on community service
  • Students must be willing to represent peers in communication with the Mayor

Term of service will be one calendar year beginning in January 2004.

The Mayor’s Youth Corps will hold monthly meetings.  Activities will focus on leadership development, team building and familiarity with city government.  Youth Corps will hold regular open discussions with the Mayor and participate in community service projects including environmental clean-ups, Paint Your Heart Out and volunteer work focused on the elderly and persons with disabilities.
